Summer School

Are you looking for ways to keep your children busy during the summer? Summer is a great time for fun and learning; our Summer School provides lots of both. It's also a great way to prepare children to return to school in the fall.

This year's Summer School will be held the week of August 12th - August 16th (Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon.) The program is for students entering 1st through 6th grade. New and returning students are welcome! Here are some of the exciting things that will take place in Summer School this year.

1st and 2nd Grade:
(with Mrs. Giles) Students will delight in playing interactive games to review reading and math skills. They will also make time to be creative and artistic; art projects inspired by the outdoors will be part of their experience.

3rd and 4th Grade:
(with Mrs. Cross) Writing creative poems about summer activities, as well as painting with watercolors will be part of this summer school experience. Students will review math facts and create their own math facts board game. They will apply science to lemonade making for a fun experiment.

5th and 6th Grade:
(with Mr. Alm) Students will engage in some exciting art projects as well as creative writing. Playing NBA Math Hoops will allow students to practice math facts and review percents and decimals in a board game that combines NBA player statistics and math. They will learn more about science through experiments that produce both physical and chemical changes.

Carden Art Festival

We are looking forward to our second Carden Art Festival which will be held on Tuesday, May 21 and Wednesday, May 22. This will be a special opportunity for families to view student art (Jr. K - E Form).

On the evening of Tuesday, May 21, we will host an evening program and open house from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Artist Howard Lyon will be the featured speaker, after which families can view student art displays. Each student has participated in this Art Festival, which offers a visual walk through our Carden Memorial art curriculum. As you explore each area, you'll be able to see the progression of knowledge and skills through the grades.

One Mile

The Mile Run

Dear Parents,

It has been such a privilege to work with your children in P.E. this year. They brighten our lives here at Carden, especially on rainy days. The much anticipated mile run is finally here, weather permitting. We will be ready, set, and running the mile Monday, April 29 and Tuesday, April 30 of next week depending on which day your child has P.E. I ask for your assistance in helping the students come prepared with good sturdy athletic shoes, water bottles, sunscreen, and inhalers if necessary. If your child needs to be medically excused, he or she will need to come to class with a note in hand. Otherwise, all students will be expected to run the mile or half-mile according to their grade level requirements (UP runs the half mile and A Form through E Form run the mile). Peheugly@cardenmemorial.com with any questions. Thank you for the opportunity to see the good and watch your children grow. I hope they all will beat their initial times from the start of the year.

B Form Upcoming Events

Dear B Form Parents,

We simply cannot believe it is almost the end of the year! We have a few events coming up. SATs: We will be taking the SATs next week beginning Monday, April 22 at 8:30 a.m. We will continue testing throughout the day. We ask that you please help your student arrive on time and refrain from taking your students out of school this week. It is very difficult for them to make up a 45 minute test. Here are some reminders for successful test taking: - have your students eat a nutritious breakfast - send a healthy snack for them to eat between tests - aim for 10+ hours of sleep Medieval Feast: Our annual Medieval Feast will take place on Friday, April 26, in celebration of our reading of "Robin Hood". Your child will wear their formal uniform to school and bring medieval attire to change into. It should be a fun event! In the past, a parent has brought archery equipment and helped small groups of students shoot bows and arrows, just like Robin Hood. Although this exciting event is not required to have a grand afternoon, we are hoping there is an archery enthusiast among you. Please contact one of us if you are able to help. Wax Museum: Your students have been working hard on their Wax Museum projects. Please keep the following deadlines in mind and note that the costume and the tri-fold board are expected to be completed at home, but everything else will be done in class. April 29- First draft of five paragraph essay is due. Students will write a five paragraph essay about their famous person. The first draft is due on this date. Students will have the opportunity to meet with a teacher in order to edit/revise their essays. May 8- Costume check-off. Students must check-off their costume with one of us by this date. They can bring in the costume, or you can take a picture of the costume and email it to us. May 10- Final draft of essay is due. The final draft of the essay is due on this date. This is their finished product.
