Carden Summer School, August 12-16

\We hope your summer is off to a wonderful start. As you plan your activities, please keep in mind our Carden Summer School, to be held the week of August 12-16, from 9:00 am - 12:00 noon.

Summer School is open to new and returning students who will be entering 1st through 6th grade, and our classes provide an opportunity for fun and learning before children return returning to school in September. Here's a preview of what we have planned:

1st and 2nd Grade: (with Mrs. Giles) Students will delight in playing interactive games to review reading and math skills. Inspiration from the outdoors will be the basis for creative art projects.

3rd and 4th Grade: (with Mrs. Cross) Writing creative poems about summer activities, and painting with watercolors will be part of this summer school experience. Students will review math facts and create their own math facts board game, and learn about science through a fun lemonade making experiment.

5th and 6th Grade: (with Mr. Alm) Students will engage in some exciting art projects as well as creative writing. Playing NBA Math Hoops will allow students to practice math facts and review percents and decimals in a board game that combines NBA player statistics and math. They will learn more about science through experiments that produce both physical and chemical changes.

D Form Summer Day Trips

We are excited to announce that it's time to sign up for the D Form Summer Day Trips. These trips are open to all students who are entering 7th grade at Carden this fall. We are offering three separate trips on August 20th, 21st, and 22nd and have planned a day of mountain biking, fishing, and hiking in that order. These trips will be led by Mr. Moffat and Mrs. North, who both have extensive experience with these activities. The cost for all three trips will be $150.00 per student. You may also choose to participate in just one or two of the planned trips. If you elect to do fewer than the full three days, the cost is $50.00 per day. This will provide for all activity expenses including lunches.

Summer Typing Practice

We have introduced our students to a new typing curriculum this year called Edutyping. It is a web-based program, so it can be accessed from your home computers. We are encouraging our students to spend 10 minutes a day practicing their typing skills. This will help them increase both their speed and accuracy. As they get into the upper grade levels, some essays and assignments will need to be typed. This will only benefit your child to improve their typing skills.

A Form's Utah Day

What a year it has been! This year in A Form we have spent a lot of time learning all about our beautiful state. We hope you've enjoyed being part of the Utah Explorer's Club and seeing your children perform in the Utah program in January. This week, our students are embarking on an Oregon Trail simulation to more fully understand what it was like for the 350,000 emigrants who traveled westward by foot, horse, or wagon. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to use the math and reading skills that they have accumulated this year, as well as experience the journey of American pioneers. As the year comes to a close, we have one last celebration to bring together all that we have learned about Utah. A Form's Utah Day will be held on Wednesday, May 29th. In order for this to run successfully we will need 8-10 parents who can run game stations and 1-2 parents to help with food. Parents need only help from 9 until 1.
