The distinctive Carden Curriculum was first developed by the author during the fifteen years that she operated her own laboratory school in New York City. She understood the needs of children and her extensive background made it possible for her to develop her own unique approach to the education of young children. In September of 1937, the Brooklyn Eagle reported the following regarding Miss Carden's successful school in New York City: The school was closed in 1949 to enable Miss Carden to respond to the requests of public and private schools for the use of her teaching material and teaching techniques. Today's Carden Memorial School curriculum includes the basic core subjects of English, mathematics, science, history, geography, and civics. French is taught in all grades. Latin is introduced in the upper school. Music, art, drama, physical education and computer literacy provide the necessary balance. The Carden Language Arts program includes a phonetic approach to word recognition; word grouping and sentence analysis. It was Miss Carden's approach to language instruction that made her famous throughout the country and inspired the directors to establish the school in Salt Lake City. |
